NUON Community Award Arrives

NUON Community AwardI knew it was on the way from the DSI Video Blog, but it was still pretty exciting to actually get the NUON Community Award for “best fansite” physically in-hand. From what I recall, these awards were originally given out by VM Labs when the Aries chips were finally manufactured, and contain two of the actual chips beautifully embedded in lucite.

For the community award, an engraved plate is mounted on the base and reads “NUON Community Award, Best Fansite,, Kevin Manne.”

Interestingly, the letter included with the award states that this is the “first NUON Community Award.” Could more of these be coming to other prominent figures in the scene? Guess we’ll have to wait and see, but for now I am very thankful for mine and have proudly placed it atop my shelf of NUON goodies, along with the cool Cross pen that was included with the award.

Thanks again to Scott and DragonShadow Industries, and good luck to any potential future recipients!

Video: NUON Aries 3-Based Reference Player

Aries 3 Reference PlayerFormer VM Labs audio guru Andreas Binner has updated the NUON Alumni Page with an all-new video clip of a hand-crafted Aries 3-based reference player. This is similar to the machines you’d see at trade shows, E3, etc., with the cool brushed steel cases and clear tops. They were used to demonstrate the machine to the public and to show what the hardware was capable of.

This is a seven minute demonstration video showing the GUI and features of the reference firmware, which most have never seen before. So click the image to view the video, it’s around 10 MB and requires the Quicktime video player.

New Site Features and Upgrades

So, I’ve finally gotten around to fixing/adding/upgrading a number of things that I’ve been meaning to for the past few months (*cough*years*cough*). Admittedly, the site had slipped into a bit of stagnation there for a while but with great power comes great responsibility so I’m back at it.

The first big update was adding a new content management system which will allow for a number of new and much needed features:

  • RSS Feed: Keep abreast of the latest NUON news from the comfort of your favorite news aggregator. (The new orange icon on the right is a link to it as well.)
  • Individual Pages for News: For easy linking, blogging and future reference.
  • Comments: Give your direct feedback to news posts (go ahead, give it a shot).
  • Archiving: More and better ways to find past news posts.

Other improvements include:

  • Google Custom Search: Gone is that old, archaic search engine. Now we have Google search directly integrated into the site.
  • Digg It: Show your support for NUON and for this site by “digging” news that you think is cool. It’s as easy as hitting the “Digg It” button on the right of any news update. Spread the word!
  • Various Tweaks: Fixed up any broken links and updated graphics here and there

What this all means is a better experience for you, the reader. So thanks for all your support over the years and I hope you enjoy these new additions. Feel free to leave any suggestions in the comments section below.

NUON Video Blog and Samsung DVD Drive Hack

I know, I know, it’s been far too long since the last NUON-Dome update. There are a number of factors contributing to that, a busy personal life and a general lack of NUON developments being the most prominent factors. But I’m going to try to get back into the swing, hopefully starting with a new content management system so I can update the site with relative ease. But enough of my excuses, let’s get to the goods:

NUON Video Blog

Leave it to Scott at DragonShadow to guilt me into an update. Much to my suprise I found a link to this YouTube video in my email this morning:

Through DragonShadow Industries, Scott has decided bring us a series of NUON video blogs throughout the year. In this first entry, he explains the concept behind the project, makes excuses for not keeping up with his NUON stuff (like me, see above), and then gives his thanks to us, the NUON community. I won’t spoil it by spelling it out here, but I will say I am very honored with Scott’s gesture and provide much thanks to him for his acknowledgement of NUON-Dome.

Keep an eye on the Video Blog Page at the DragonShadow website for updates and future episodes.

It’s with that feeling of thanks that I post T_T’s guide to fixing the faulty DVD drive in your Samsung N501, N504 or N505 NUON DVD player. It’s a simple but ingenious fix that involves swapping out a drive from a similar Samsung DVD player. Click here to check it out, and for future reference it will be on the Info Page. Thanks again T_T!
