Version 0.5.1 of Nuance Discovered

NUON-Dome forum member cdoty has turned up a final version of Riff’s NUON emulator, Nuance. This version was presumably completed and ready for release prior to Riff’s death in August, but he never got to share it with the rest of the world.

We’re happy now to be able to share this with everyone, the last available revision of his work. Here’s what the Readme file says is new:

6/08/2007, version 0.5.1:
Fixed compiler bug that caused nearly all programs to crash when constant propagation and
dead code elimination was enabled.

The file has been archived here on our servers and is available on the Downloads page or directly by clicking here.

NUON-Dome Forums get Face-lift

Just a quick heads-up in case you haven’t visited the forums in a while — we’ve recently given them a face-lift to match the rest of the site. Gone is the old look which, while functional, really didn’t mesh with N-D.

So, thanks to the help of Ghan_04 and The Helper, the forums are looking much better. Stop in, check it out and say hi!

DragonShadow Video Blog #6 - Dev System

The next installment of DragonShadow’s video blog series on NUON is here, this time it takes a look at the NUON development system. Skah_T shows us what the system consists of and gets into his plans for putting the hardware in a more compact and attractive case.

Author of NUON emulator “Nuance” Dies

Mike Perry, known in the NUON scene as “Riff,” has passed away. He died from a cranial aneurysm on August 1 at the age of 32. Perry’s father recently contacted a few people from the NUON scene to make us aware of the situation.

Nuance running Decaying OrbitPerry was the author of the NUON emulator Nuance, through which he brilliantly reverse-engineered the NUON hardware with minimal documentation and assistance. Though Perry was typically quiet and seemed to prefer to toil away at the intricacies of the hardware, he was a brilliant mind and his work will live on through Nuance.

Perry’s father has offered to share the files off of his son’s computer, which should be available to the NUON community in the matter of a few days. Hopefully someone can pick up the pieces and continue where he left off.

Feel free to leave any comments about Perry in this thread. For a particularly good example of just a shred of his knowledge, check out his back-and-forth discussion of PS3’s Cell processor in comparison to NUON in this thread.

DragonShadow Video Blog #5 - Robot Ron

In this month’s entry of the ongoing series of NUON video blogs, Skah_T takes us into his latest project, the port of Robot Ron from Yaroze to NUON. Skah_T shows the game running on the Yaroze and then shows us the (minimal!) progress made to the NUON port.

For next time, we’ll have a look at the NUON dev kit and Skah_T’s attempt to “pimp” it out.
