Can I get that NUON super-sized?
6/27/2003 by K3V

NUON-Dome reader Stacey Adam sent in some pictures of his home theater setup featuring, of course, NUON! He's got a system with 6.1 surround sound, an LCD front projector (with a screen size of 8 feet wide and 4.5 feet high), and a Samsung N2000 and the newly-released DRC480N for VLM in progressive scan.

Impressive to say the least! Behold:
Nice picture of the 'Dome in there too. Thanks for sharing!

Progressive Scan RCA DRC480N Now Available

Believe it or not, a new NUON DVD player is now available. Back when RCA announced the DRC300N, they also claimed that a Progressive Scan DVD player featuring NUON technology would be available in the DRC480N. Since Genesis Microchip, the new owners of NUON technology, seemed to give up on NUON, it was believed that the 480N would never see the light of day.

But, thanks to a heads up from NUON-Dome reader Stacey Adam, we can now report that there are a number of online retailers carrying the new NUON player. Buy.com has it for $149, Beachaudio.com has it for $159, and Hypaudio.com has it for $167.96.

Here are the features listed on Buy.com:

  • Faroudja DCDi Progressive Scan - Eliminate jagged edges that appear in standard interlaced video with Directional Correlational Deinterlacing (DCDi) technology.
  • MP3 Pro Decoder - Decodes and plays MP3 Pro files that are stored on a CDR/RW disc.
  • Nuon³* Technology - Enjoy Nuon encoded movie discs or experience enhanced special effects.
  • Digital PhotoView - View digital photos on the TV by inserting a CD-R/RW JPEG encoded disc into the player.
  • Plays DVD, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, DVD+RW, MP3 Pro - Plays back a variety of DVD and CD formatted discs.
  • Optical and Coaxial Digital Audio Outputs - Provides an encoded six-channel Dolby¹^ or DTS² digital output via your choice of optical (toslink) or coaxial connections²*.
  • Universal Remote Control - Provides DVD operations plus control of the primary functions of major brand remote-controllable TVs, VCRs and cable boxes.
Of course, like the 300N, the 480N does not have NUON controller ports (as seen in this image ), but this is your only choice for a Progressive Scan NUON player. No word yet on if games, movies or homebrew software will run on the 480N, but we'll have more info as it becomes available.

Update: You can use this link to get to a coupon that will give you an additional $10 off of any purchase of over $100 in electronics, bringing the 480N down to $139 at buy.com
