Talkin With Tony Takoushi

Session Start: Sat Feb 10 12:33:28 2001
[12:33] *** Now talking in #nuon-dome
[12:33] *** Topic is 'Chat with Tony Takoushi from TAKS '
[12:33] *** Set by K3V on Sat Feb 10 11:54:27
[12:33] <K3V> GameFan is "on hold" right now...hopefully making a comeback
[12:33] <tonytak> its funny if i had done it on ps2 or drmcast it would have
looked a lot better and got the coverage ..
[12:33] <BeefMan> really sucks
[12:33] <Jagman> hello guys.. only can stay a few, gotta go to work soon :/
[12:33] <BeefMan> im glad you did for NUON though =)
[12:34] <Jagman> Hi Tony
[12:34] <BeefMan> hello
[12:34] <tonytak> hi jagman glad you're here :)
[12:34] <K3V> Yeah, we're all happy to have FF as a part of our NUON games
collection.
[12:34] <mobiusmax> Does this mean you don't see many games coming out for the
nuon?
[12:34] <tonytak> i may look to do a 'remix' later if time allows
[12:34] <K3V> The issue with the FF review was the "final" issue of GameFan, for
now ;-)
[12:34] <tonytak> others will come BUT they will wait for the installed base to
hit in..
[12:34] <mobiusmax> Next comes a review of t3k, hopefully.
[12:35] <tonytak> yep and it was sent back on tuesday :)
[12:35] <K3V> So you're planning on doing more stuff for NUON?
[12:35] <tonytak> my instinct tells me that the t3k review will say grt game BUT
who wants original
[12:35] <tonytak> no plans but a remix would be VERY easy to do..there are tons
of assets left over that were not used
[12:36] <mobiusmax> How do you feel about t3k? You're friends aren't you?
[12:36] <irata> Who cares about originality when you can have the 395th
incarnation of the first racing game ? ;-)
[12:36] <BeefMan> How difficult is it to develop for NUON?
[12:36] *** Phaln has joined #nuon-dome
[12:36] <Jagman> Tony: considering the relatively current small userbase of the
NUON, are you happy with the sales of FF, or are they about what you expected?
[12:36] <tonytak> I t3k is great..my controller fritzes out so i have not been
able to playt it properly
[12:36] <K3V> I'd love to see it. An enhanced FF with some new missions would be
great if possible
[12:36] <Phaln> Yo :)
[12:36] <tonytak> then let vm know :)
[12:37] <K3V> Welcome Phaln.
[12:37] <tonytak> hi phain :)
[12:37] <tonytak> it could be done quickly but my immediate priority is to get
mm to a good demo state
[12:37] <K3V> 3Everyone email VM Labs about FF Remix ;-)
[12:37] <Phaln> I've still got to get a NUON, but consider me among those that
say Freefall looks great :)
[12:38] <BeefMan> is MM for the PC?
[12:38] <tonytak> thanks phain..it means a lot to me tohear yopu liker it so
much work went into it
[12:38] <tonytak> mmis for pc but it was designed for console so it is for xbox
and ps2 and maybe gamecube
[12:38] <K3V> 3Tony: When do you expect MM to be finished?
[12:38] <tonytak> i am creating tracks that are beyond anything i have seen or
played before
[12:39] <mobiusmax> Did you see the demos of ray-tracing andvoxels before making
the game, and if so are those abilities worth exploiting in the future?
[12:39] <BeefMan> Why cant MM be ported to NUON, is it too complex?
[12:39] <tonytak> good question the game is shaping up very well..i would guess
from 12 to 15 months..
[12:39] <tonytak> mm maybe able to go to nuon in the future but at present it
does not give me the oomph i need
[12:40] *** Phaln has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited )
[12:40] <tonytak> the more we get into mmthe more i realise i need bleeding edge
tech to do it..
[12:40] <K3V> What about Pinball Toons that you mentioned in the Interview? Any
plans with that at this point?
[12:40] *** Phaln has joined #nuon-dome
[12:40] <tonytak> toon sis ready to go into production but again it is radically
different fom what has gone before
[12:40] <BeefMan> mabe a future version of NUON like raptor could handle it
[12:40] <tonytak> raptor? whatever do you mean :)
[12:41] <K3V> Seems to be a recurring theme with TAKS: dramatically different
gameplay. And that's awesome.
[12:41] <BeefMan> you want to help me out here KEv with raptor
[12:41] <tonytak> am i mad or do you want different games?
[12:41] <BeefMan> i want different
[12:41] <K3V> I think Tony knows exactly what Raptor is. ;-)
[12:41] <BeefMan> hehe
[12:41] <tonytak> i really believe in original games but it SO tough to convince
publishers..
[12:42] <K3V> Yeah, we want originality but do the masses?
[12:42] <tonytak> yes..i can't believe all there is fps and strategy games it
must stagnate..
[12:42] <BeefMan> maybe it wont be so hard soon because it seems that a lot of
pubslishing houses are losing money over there rehash every year
[12:43] <Jagman> thats why i've been playing a lot of crazy japanese games
lately, hehe
[12:43] <tonytak> i have been around since 1979 and seem many booms and busts
[12:43] <tonytak> i love the jap games many are so way out!!
[12:43] <Jagman> yeah, totally
[12:43] <K3V> Tomb Raider 10296574 just won't have the same appeal as it first
did.
[12:43] <BeefMan> i never really liked tomb raider
[12:43] <tonytak> it seems that way with the collapse of the ps12 market
[12:44] <K3V> I never got into TR either.
[12:44] <tonytak> i have not bought the drmcat/ps2 as there are no killer apps
[12:44] <tonytak> i did eventually for a flight game for my son but for ps2 why
should i buy it?
[12:44] <Jagman> no kille apps for DC?
[12:44] <irata> Hey, DC is nice :-)
[12:44] <K3V> PS2 doesn't have the system seller for me, but DC has a good
selection of titles.
[12:44] <BeefMan> Tony where would you place the nuon graphically? between PS
and N64?
[12:44] <tonytak> yes there are now :) I have veronica crazxy taxi etc
[12:45] <mobiusmax> How does developing on the ps2 look?
[12:45] <HolyWater> i love dc
[12:45] <BeefMan> DC is tight
[12:45] <Jagman> I've been playing a ton of Typing of the Dead, and Tokyo Bus
Guide lately :)
[12:45] <tonytak> thta's a fair view of it..the nuon can do good stuff and the
libs have improved..
[12:45] <mobiusmax> it seems everyone is scared of losing money.
[12:45] <K3V> I'm on disk 3 of Shenmue right now, gotta finish that one off
soon!
[12:45] <Jagman> cool Kev.. what part are you at now?
[12:46] <BeefMan> what have improved in the libs that wasnt included in FF?
[12:46] <tonytak> yep i visited sega amrica in oct last year and shinobu told me
to wait until after xmas before devloping on it!
[12:46] <K3V> Umm...I'm at the part where I've got a job at the docks, doing the
forklift races every morning ;-)
[12:46] <Jagman> Only part I had trouble in Shenmue was the 'Metal Gear' part,
hehe
[12:46] <Jagman> took me forever
[12:46] <tonytak> boy we were in there VERY early..we used early gl libs that
were enhanced significantly but I did not want to rework the code as to time
[12:46] <BeefMan> thats probably the most tediuos part of the game
[12:46] <Jagman> forklift races are cool :)
[12:46] <K3V> Jagman: Yeah, that part was tough! I got cought a million times.
[12:47] <BeefMan> gl = openGL?
[12:47] <Jagman> so did I, I had to turn it off and start from the beggning
cause I lost so many days getting cought
[12:47] <tonytak> yes, it is reworked for nuon
[12:47] <BeefMan> cool
[12:47] <K3V> Interesting.
[12:47] <tonytak> how do you feel about a driving game that takes it to the next
level??
[12:48] <BeefMan> even though quake is a fps i wonder how hard it would be to
port to nuon with opengl
[12:48] <Jagman> I was also one of the people that found the day 3 forklift
glitch :(( that sucked
[12:48] <BeefMan> it was done for DC
[12:48] <K3V> Sounds awesome to me. I'm not much of a driving sim kinda guy so
it sounds right up my alley.
[12:48] <BeefMan> what was that glitch?
[12:48] <tonytak> what are your fav driving games and why?
[12:48] <mobiusmax> Hard-drivin
[12:48] <K3V> 3 day forklift glitch?
[12:48] <Jagman> not a big fan of driving sims, but I like driving games, more
arcade style.. perhaphs with weapons and things
[12:49] <BeefMan> MotoRacer, cause it make me feel like im flying
[12:49] <mobiusmax> fantastic force feedback cabinet
[12:49] <BeefMan> original MotoRacer
[12:49] <K3V> I like stuff like SF Rush and the like, just crazy-outrageous fast
racing.
[12:49] <tonytak> we have tracks that divide into 8 lanes that roll and stack
and twist every which way..
[12:49] <irata> Great American Cross-Country Race ... and Carmageddon 2
[12:49] <Jagman> yeah, I took a certian route doing moving the crates and an
event didn't trigger and EVERy day would be the same over and over again and I
didn't know how to fix it,, but I finally found out why in an FAQ and luckily I
didn't have to restart the game
[12:49] <BeefMan> i think the sense of speed is the most important part of a
good racer
[12:50] <tonytak> the vehicles morph and have unique attribs
[12:50] <BeefMan> that sounds crazy tony
[12:50] <BeefMan> cant wait to try a demo
[12:50] *** Phaln has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited )
[12:50] <tonytak> it is totallY W-I-L-D
[12:50] <K3V> That sucks Jagman...I might be doing the same thing ;-)
[12:50] <K3V> Yeah, I want a demo of MM!
[12:50] <Jagman> heh, well if you get stuck let me know, i can tell you how to
get out of it
[12:51] <K3V> Ok, thanks.
[12:51] <tonytak> IT WILL BE AT DEMO STATE IN AROUND 4 WEEKS, THE DESIGN is done
the engine complete all physics and collision is in exporters and editor are
done :)
[12:51] <BeefMan> How did you get started in Game programming Tony?
[12:51] <tonytak> back in 1985..i got bored reviewing
[12:51] <tonytak> i learnt coding from rodney zaks coding the 6502
[12:51] <tonytak> jeff helped me a lot as did other coders..
[12:52] <tonytak> i didmtit for 3.5 years then got out..
[12:52] <BeefMan> you think its as easy today to get started into game
programming as it might have been 15 years ago?
[12:52] <K3V> What was the first game you worked on that got published?
[12:53] <irata> Tony: How good are the physics in MM? Similar to Carmageddon2??
[12:53] <tonytak> it is way tougher today the first game i wrote was Hyperforce
a wierd abstarct collecting game for the Com
[12:53] <tonytak> the physics are way beyond ANY game honestly the tracks are
insane and the physicsd ahve to be robust to cater for this
[12:53] <Jagman> heh, interesting, considering a Hyperforce was just released
for Jag
[12:53] <tonytak> i saw that and laughed:)
[12:53] <tonytak> it was relased in 1985..
[12:54] <K3V> Yeah, and the guys from Miracle Designs knew the guys behind Jaggy
Hyperforce
[12:54] <tonytak> its a small world/inmdustry
[12:54] <irata> ... sounds awesome !! I assume you know Carmageddon2?
[12:54] <tonytak> yep i have one of their artists on booard on mm!
[12:55] <tonytak> you can see my wierd and simple efforst if you get a Commodore
16 emulator
[12:55] <K3V> Are you still under NDA with VM Labs?
[12:55] <tonytak> i did 3 games for C16 and the same games on Atari800 and
C64/ST and amiga
[12:55] <tonytak> i am still under nda ;)
[12:56] <tonytak> what you after?
[12:56] <BeefMan> hehe
[12:56] <BeefMan> how much memory does the nuon have? 4megs?
[12:56] <K3V> Just wondering if we can totally fire away with questions or not
;-)
[12:56] <BeefMan> just say more or less
[12:56] <tonytak> this is public domian if you look it is 16 meg
[12:56] <BeefMan> bytes?
[12:57] <tonytak> bytes..
[12:57] <BeefMan> whoa
[12:57] <tonytak> remember it is software driven system with NO accelerated
hardware
[12:57] <BeefMan> helluva lot more than i thought
[12:57] <K3V> So is NUON really 4 processors on one die working in parallel?
[12:57] <tonytak> so it does damn well for raw proc power..
[12:57] <BeefMan> sure does
[12:58] <Jagman> well I have to get to work, glad you could stop by for a chat
tony.. Later
[12:58] <K3V> Later Jagman!
[12:58] <BeefMan> later
[12:58] <mobiusmax> later
[12:58] <tonytak> because it is soft driven you can do anything on it BUT it is
limited by the cycles ultimately.
[12:58] <Jagman> adios
[12:58] <tonytak> bye!
[12:58] *** Disconnected
